Dog Friendly Landscapes

DOGs

When you think of dog-friendly landscapes it is probably quite easy to make a rapid list.

But what about dog-safe?

Dog-friendly landscapes are areas where a dog has plenty of room to run and to play (and ideally on surfaces that will be safe for its paws…and safe from its paws!), access to clean drinking water either through a water bowl or other clean water source, maybe with fun extras like a doggie-window in your fence so they can watch passers-by, or with a doggie sandbox for digging, or a doggie splash pool for keeping cool on hot summer days.

Dog-safe landscapes are all of that, with special attention to your doggos safety.

Splash pools are great but you want to make sure they are only able to be used while supervised. This means either behind a fence of their own, or removable such as a small kiddie pool that can be emptied and stored upside-down or elsewhere so water can not collect in it.

You also want to make sure that your dog has access to plenty of shade. Dogs can get sunburned or experience heat stroke just like humans can, so keep your furry friend safe with lots of shade from trees or shade sails or with a pergola or other covered area for them to avoid constant and direct sun exposure.

If you have a garden, you will want to avoid plants that can be toxic to dogs, such as chamomile, clover, and hostas. Using raised garden beds can also help with keeping pups away from plants (and from marking their territory or digging where your garden is trying to grow)!

Fencing can also be used to designate a dog-space, or protect parts of your yard you would prefer remained un-frolicked in by your four legged friend.
